Itinerary

Texas Hill Country Bike Tour
Day 1: Sunday – LBJ National Historic Park to Comfort

From our meeting point in Austin, TX, we’ll whisk you straight into the heart of the Texas Hill Country as we begin the tour with an interesting and unique diversion, a visit to the LBJ State and National Historical Parks in Stonewall. Then it’s time to mount up and begin our ride to picturesque COMFORT nestled along the banks of the Guadalupe River and Cypress Creek. All routes follow the path of the defunct F&N railroad as you ride the scenic Old San Antonio Road, passing over the Old Railroad Tunnel (once a major tourist attraction in it’s own right) in the process. But wait, there’s much more! We’ve also planned a visit to the award-winning Becker Vineyards for a taste of some of Texas’ finest wines. And no journey in these parts would be complete without a stopover in the iconic and legendary hamlet of Luckenbach, where “Everybody is Somebody.” At the end of the day, relax in historic surroundings at the Haven River Inn, a 100 year-old mansion idyllically located on the banks of the Guadalupe.

Mileage for the day: 38.3 miles [62 km]
Route options: 46.9 miles [76 km] and 59.4 miles [96 km]
Shorter mileage available via shuttle.

Meals Provided: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2: Monday – Comfort to Bandera

After a leisurely breakfast, we’ll depart the luxury of our historic mansion and make the short ride into “downtown” Comfort. There you can take a stroll through the historic town of Comfort, where almost the entire downtown is on the National Register of Historic Places. Then as we resume our journey, we meander along backcountry lanes to Center Point and further along the peaceful banks of Verde Creek to the historic Camp Verde Store. From there, it’s up and over Bandera Pass and down into the Medina River Valley to the colorful town of BANDERA, the “Cowboy Capital of the World.” Situated on the Medina River, Bandera still maintains much of its frontier heritage and the cultural influence of the large Polish community that settled the town. Also, in case you somehow didn’t notice, Bandera County is known as the “Switzerland of Texas.”

Mileage for the day: 35 miles. [56 km]
Route options: 31 mile [50 km] route available
Extended 46 mile [74 km] route via Medina, the “Apple Capital of Texas” available
Shorter mileage available via shuttle.

Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner

Day 3: Tuesday – Bandera to Utopia

Today we ride over Tarpley Pass as we cross from the Medina River valley into Sabinal Canyon enroute to UTOPIA. As we cross from one river floodplain to another, our route includes some of the most spectacular scenery in the Hill Country high atop the Edwards Plateau. Crystal-clear rivers and springs, deep canyons and exotic wildlife ranches are characteristic of the area. Our cozy accommodations near the friendly village of Utopia are equally idyllic, as the name “Utopia” implies, since they are right on the beautiful tree-lined Sabinal River. (Don’t forget your swimsuit!) For those itching for more miles, an optional ride to the popular Garner State Park on the Frio River should scratch your itch.

Mileage for the day: 36 miles. [58 km]
Route options: Additional 36 mile round trip route to Garner State Park (72 miles total) [116 km]
Shorter mileage available via shuttle.

Meals provided: Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4: Wednesday – Utopia to Kerrville

Our route wanders along the lovely Sabinal River for ten or more peaceful miles before passing through Vanderpool and by Lost Maples State Natural Area. Then it’s time to climb up onto the “high lonesome.” We’ll be ridge running along semi-arid grasslands before diving down into the headwaters basin of the south fork of the Guadalupe River. In those final, twisting miles through Hunt and into KERRVILLE you’ll cross the Guadalupe no fewer than fourteen incredibly spectacular times. At the end of the day, refuel yourself in Kerrville’s finest surroundings, the Inn of the Hills Conference Resort.

Mileage for the day: 67 miles. [108 km]
Route options: Shorter mileage available via shuttle

Meals provided: Breakfast, Dinner

Texas Hill Country Bike Tour
Day 5: Thursday – Kerrville to Fredericksburg

Leaving Kerrville, we quickly exit the main thoroughfare to travel some of the most peaceful backroads in the state. Settled by German homesteaders in the 1840’s, the area is more reminiscent of Europe than the USA, with its distinctive limestone farmhouses, narrow country lanes and even a Texas Ghost town or two. We emerge from this tranquility in historic FREDERICKSBURG, where you’ll have the remainder of the day to enjoy the town’s captivating charm. Founded by German settlers in 1846, the town has certainly become the toast of Central Texas, and strong civic pride has helped maintain its picturesque appeal.

Mileage for the day: 34 miles [55 km]
Route options: 52 mile [84 km] route via Hilltop Café
Shorter mileage available via shuttle

Meals provided: Breakfast

Texas Hill Country Bike Tour
Day 6: Friday – Fredericksburg, the Willow City Loop

We’ll conclude our adventure in a spectacular fashion by saddling up for one of the finest rides in the state – the incredible Willow City Loop. And to prove that getting there is half the fun, we start with a spin down the quiet and incredibly scenic Crabapple Creek Road. After lunch at a favorite winery nearby, we’ll cruise the loop, often cited by Texas Highways as one of the state’s most scenic routes, especially for wildflower aficionados. Afterwards, join us for our final banquet and experience the culinary delights of one of our favorite gourmet restaurants.

Mileage for the day: 62 miles [100 km]
Route options: Crabapple Creek only – 25 miles [40 km], Crabapple Creek/Willow City Loop only – 43 miles [70 km]
Shorter mileage available via shuttle

Meals provided: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 7: Saturday – Return to Austin

Following a tasty breakfast, we'll shuttle you back to Austin in our private coach for your departing flight home or on to your accommodation there. If we’ve done our job well, then we’d expect that it won’t be good-bye, but rather “see you later, partner.”

Meals provided: Breakfast
