Escapades cyclists will board the Island Queen for a scenic ride across the Vineyard Sound to the beautiful island of Martha's Vineyard. Sightings of sea turtles and sea birds are possible, so keep a sharp eye. The island now known as Martha’s Vineyard, vacation spot for wealthy New Englanders, was once the territory of the Wampanoag Indians. As European settlers discovered the island, a busy whaling industry developed. In more modern times, Martha’s Vineyard was the filming location for Jaws, Jaws 2 and Jaws: The Revenge. With a year-round population of almost 15,000, the island’s main industry now is tourism and businesses associated with the tourism industry. On Martha’s Vineyard, Escapades cyclists will have a choice of cycling on bike paths or the island’s well paved roads.

Day 3: Hyannis

The tour continues along the coast biking on roads with very little traffic through Mara Vista, Menauhant, New Seabury, Osterville and finally to the historic seaport of Hyannis. Originally farming, shipbuilding and reclaiming salt from the sea supported this seaside town, but Hyannis went on to develop into a popular resort destination. Most famous in modern times as home to the Kennedy clan, Hyannis developed on the south shore of the Cape Cod peninsula that juts into the ocean approximately 100 miles, much of which is beautiful, public beaches.
Lodging: Hyannis Harbor Hotel

Day 4: Brewster

Departing Hyannis, the group will bike the Cape Cod Rail Trail (CCRT), which runs for 22 miles from Dennis to Wellfleet. This paved bike trail winds through the countryside of the cape to scenic Brewster. Developed in another railroad right-of-way, the CCRT has a paved surface for bikers. The trail is recently repaved, well marked and smooth. During the trip, the bike tour will pass several freshwater ponds, cranberry bogs and scenic views. Little country stores along the way give cyclists plenty of opportunity to grab drinks and snacks. The town of Brewster is known as "The Sea Captain's Town," due to its rich seafaring history and elegant homes built in the 1800's by wealthy sea captains, who chose this scenic bayside town as their home.  Brewster was named after Elder William Brewster, one of the original pilgrims aboard the Mayflower.

Once back in Brewster, we celebrate our tour with a farewell dinner of local seafood specialties.
