Our coast and desert bike trip offers the very best in warm-weather, winter biking in the country. You will bike along the magnificent Pacific Coast of Southern California. Leaving the ocean behind, bikers will stay in Julian, a mountain gold rush town, and then bike miles down to the Anza-Borrego desert floor at Borrego Springs.  You will then bike through desert badlands to the world-famous Salton Sea. The Coast and Desert bike tour will wrap up by biking through the majestic, rugged beauty of the vineyards of Temecula Valley wine country.

Terrain:  The bike tour is flat along the coast and varies between flat to moderately hilly in the desert depending on route selection. There is a substantial amount of down hill biking on the bike tour including an 11-mile descent into the desert.


Weather:   The average high in San Diego in February is 66° F and the low 52° F, and in Borrego Springs 73° F and 47° F

Catamaran Resort Hotel & Spa:  Just a hundred yards from the Pacific Ocean and within walking distance of Mission Bay, the world’s largest aquatic park, the Catamaran Resort Hotel and Spa is a self-contained vacation. Julian Hotel:  An 1890s nationally registered historic landmark located in the old California mining town of Julian, the Julian Hotel is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Southern California. Borrego Springs Resort & Spa:   With the Anza-Borrego Desert on one side and the foothills of the Santa Rosa Mountains on the other, Borrego Springs Resort and Spa is surrounded by the beauty of nature. Inn at Churon Winery:   At the Inn at Churon Winery, guests can immerse themselves in life on a vintner’s estate. Arrival and Departure: This tour will originate and terminate in San Diego, CA. Escapades will assist with hotel arrangements and local transportation both before and after the tour.

 

Daily Mileage Options:  15 to 45 miles with longer and shorter options available on all days.

 

Day 1: San Diego Arrival and Welcome:
We will meet at Catamaran Resort Hotel in San Diego. After introductions and bike fittings, there is an optional afternoon bike ride on the bike path along Mission Bay and the Pacific Ocean. A wonderful dinner will follow at a local favorite in the Gas Lamp District of San Diego.

Day 2: La Jolla Shores and Julian:
After breakfast on the bay, we will begin the day's journey along a scenic bike path through Pacific Beach and meander our way to the beautiful town of La Jolla for lunch overlooking the ocean. Stronger riders can opt to continue on for a challenging climb to Torrey Pines Park. We will shuttle everyone from La Jolla & Torrey Pines State Beach to Julian, a quaint gold-rush town in the mountain foothills outside San Diego.

Day 3: Julian to Anza-Borrego Springs:
Today you will bike from the town of Julian to our resort in Borrego Springs. This is one of the most spectacular rides anywhere as you make your way down to the desert overlooking miles of brown and pink rocks and mountains, the tan, gray and green desert floor and the blue of the Salton Sea beyond. We will have a picnic lunch along the way before arriving at our luxurious, desert oasis: The Borrego Springs Resort. Here you will enjoy a relaxing two-night stay with tennis, hot tubs and spa services.

Day 4: Anza-Borrego Springs and the Salton Sea:
You will ride into the desert on a spectacular descent to the Salton Sea. After lunch at the turn-around point, stronger riders can opt to ride back, while shuttle service is available for those who wish to return to the resort to enjoy the countless amenities of the Borrego Springs Resort, whether you prefer to lie out by one of many pools, keep up your fitness in the health spa or play a game of tennis. There will be a sumptuous dinner at the resort.

Day 5: Temecula Wine Country and Wine Tasting:
Our journey departs from our desert oasis today, as we head north towards the Temecula Wine Country. You will ride along rolling foothills in the heart of the wine country while passing orchards and horse ranches. You will arrive at the Mount Palomar Vineyard for a gourmet picnic lunch at The Taverna at Mount Palomar Mediterranean Deli. A wine tasting in the wine cellars of the Churon Winery follows.  A fabulous dinner at the Inn finishes our day in the wine country.

Day 6: Breakfast Shuttle and Goodbyes:
Following an unforgettable sunrise and a plentiful breakfast, our journey comes to a close. Shuttle service to the San Diego Airport or local hotel.
